what the checklist covers
  • How to find every Server 2016 and SQL 2016 instance, including the ones nobody remembers
  • Why the operating system and the database have to move together, and what that means for sequencing
  • The backup verification and rollback rehearsal gate before any cutover
  • Choosing between in-place upgrade, new hardware, cloud, and paid Extended Security Updates
  • A per-workload wave plan with owners, dependencies and cutover windows
  • The compliance angle: what unsupported systems mean for Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 and your cyber insurance

sql server 2016 left extended support in july 2026. windows server 2016 follows on 12 january 2027. because sql 2016 will not run on server 2022 or 2025, the two moves have to be planned together.
